Phoenox was started by Jack Mosley back in 1954. Jack was a local weaver who began by making fabric for bus seats and traditional hearth rugs that were woven from locally sourced wool, acrylic and cotton from Lancashire. A true family business, Jack’s son David soon became involved along with cousins Melvyn and Michael Mosley. When Jack died in 1975 David took over management of the company.more
David focused on production, new products and securing major new contracts from mail order firms. He is well remembered by many employees for his renditions of ‘Oh Danny Boy’ as he toured the factory floor.
This clocking in machine has been used since the day we opened and is still used today!more

Textiles have been manufactured inYorkshire for over 700 years. The grass covered hills and access to an abundant and fresh supply of water has meant that the Pennine area in particular has always been perfect for textile production.more
Over the years, many Yorkshire textile companies have gone out of business, or moved their manufacturing bases abroad, but we have always stayed close to our Yorkshire roots, keeping faith with the loyal, hardworking nature of the skilled local people who have helped our business to sustain itself into the third generation of family ownership.contact us
West Yorkshire has always been one of the most important regions for the UK’s textile industry and the Pennine area where we are based is also one of the most naturally beautiful of these. This has inspired us to develop a sustainable strategy to minimize our environmental impact and create products that reduce waste and scarce natural materials. We are now a ZERO waste-to-landfill business through our strategic partners within the waste management industry (CMS Group Ltd.), so all our general waste goes to the most appropriate location.more
Since we launched Hug Rug, our award winning, environmentally friendly rug brand in 2008, we have recycled and used: 159,443 car tyres, 5.5 million t-shirts, 3.5 million plastic bottles in the manufacturing process, and we’ve recycled over 1.97 million litres of water.
We are committed to using organic printing inks with GOTS standard (Global Organic Textile Standard).
Every time we sell a Hug Rug, the power that boils the kettle in your kitchen, may have been powered by waste from the manufacturing process that made it. This fuel is called refuse derived fuel (RDF).more
Our textile waste: fabric and yarn waste goes to Germany to a furnace to be turned into power which then goes back to the national grid.
Our recycled paper waste: cardboard and paper is sent to box and paper companies in the UK from whom we then buy our recycled paper and boxes from the process.
Our recycled waste: metal, plastic and wood goes to a Chinese recycling plant which then gets turned back into the appropriate form and is put back into the circle chain.
Our general waste: food and floor sweepings is sent for composting.contact us
